Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training, more popularly known as HIMT is fast becoming India’s Southern training hub with the largest training offerings in the country for merchant navy officers. Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training was established by Mr.Sanjeev S. Vakil in September 1998. From a single classroom conducting three courses, HIMT in a short span of time has become India’s Largest and Premier Maritime training institute in the country conducting maximum courses (approved by Government of India - Directorate General of Shipping) under one roof in the heart of Chennai city. FACILITIES:
The HIMT Post Sea Training Center is now a modern four storey independent building,well connected by all means of transport right up to the institute’s doorstep.The Director’s office strategically overseas the entire ground floor area and makes the Director himself accessible to the knowledge seekers thronging the institute. A ship-shaped notice board, alleyways replicating a ship’s accommodation and gleaming portholes complete the maritime picture. Ample elevator capacity, twelve spacious air-conditioned classrooms with Hi-tech Teaching Aids like LCD projectors, World class Simulator rooms and a library precedes the roof-garden canteen. A large seminar room capable of comfortably seating a hundred along with a 30-seater conference room adds to the unique facilities, which HIMT is happy to offer to the entire marine community for holding seminars and meetings.
The total carpet area of the Post Sea Cum Value added courses center measures to about 11800 sq. ft. with adequate parking area for vehicles is the added advantage of being in the heart of the city. Though the hostel facilities are not mandatory for the Post sea courses (majority of the candidates being senior Master’s/Chief Engineers residing in the city), HIMT has In-house 3-bed room flats for accommodating outstation candidates. Additionally, HIMT has a tie-up with near by Hotels and Guest houses suiting different budgets of the out station candidates. The immediate neighbors of HIMT are Law college hostel, Aysha Hospital, Hi-tech Laboratory and Motcham theater.
Himt has its own pre-sea campus with a built up area of about 90,000 sq ft. spread over in sprawling 12 acers of land at the outskirts of chennai, (just 10 kms from world famous Mahabalipuram). The pre-sea campus houses all world class facilities and includes an academic block, accommodation block, and an ample cafeteria.The aproach to the campus is dominated by a temple dedicated to Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity.
In addition to the above facilities HIMT has its own Mock-up for Advanced Fire Fighting Training. The only AFF Mock up in TamilNadu is fabricated completely from steel and is considered to be the Largest in India. The Mock-up is not only used for training HIMT candidates but even other leading Institutes of Chennai are utilizing the HIMT Mockup for training. HIMT mock-up is located in an area of about 3.5 acers of land with waterfront for the Boat work.
Air conditioned Class Rooms with L.C.D. Projectors, Overhead Projectors, Videos/CDs, Instruments, Prototypes. In addition to a vast collection of books and publications, the latest Merchant Shipping notices and rules, databank of Shipping companies and other marine links are also available. HIMT has also made arrangements with prominent libraries to facilitate candidates undergoing the course, to use the library and borrow books free of charge.

Courses here are most expensive as opposed to anywhere else in the country.
